Characteristics of health education knowledge and skills of nurses and midwives at the Thien An Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital

Abstract
Background: Health education has a great role in helping patients change harmful and maintain healthy behaviors. To achieve high efficiency in health education activities, nurses need to have good health education knowledge and skills.
Objective and method: Describe the knowledge and skills of nurses and midwives in health education for inpatients at Thien An Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital in 2022. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 15 nurses from April to October 2022. A self-developed questionnaire was developed to evaluate the knowledge and practice of nurses and midwives in health education activities. The data was collected and processed by Epidata 3.1 and SPSS 20.0.
Results: The percentage of nurses and midwives with very good, good, and average knowledge was 60.0%, 20.0% and 20.0%, respectively. The average knowledge score is 49.8(±7.06)/60 points. The percentage of nurses with very good, good, and average skills was 13.3%, 33.3% and 53.3%, respectively. The average score of 08 health education skills of nurses is 28.2(±3.97)/40 points.
Conclusion: the health education knowledge and skills of nurses and midwives at Thien An Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital were good. However, some nurses need further training and some health education components need to be further revised.
