Abstract

Background: Full-thickness skin graft is one of the treatment methods for soft tissue defects that has been applied by surgeons worldwide and in Vietnam since the late 19th century. Taking skin from the inguinal fold both ensures coverage of the defect on the body as well as the aesthetic area of the skin from the inguinal fold where it can be sutured directly. Based on these advantages, we conducted this research to evaluate the effectiveness of the method in the treatment of soft tissue defects in the body.
Objectives: To determine the characteristics of the graft and the results of the treatment of soft tissue defects by full-thickness skin graft from the inguinal fold.
Subjects and methods: This study was conducted on 35 patients with soft tissue defects who underwent surgical coverage with full-thickness skin graft from the inguinal fold from January 2021 to October 2022 at the Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital.
Results: The study included 35 cases of soft tissue defects, aged 16 to 73, with an average age of 43.7 ± 8.5. The main cause of the defect was due to accidents after trauma in 15/35 (42.9%), the size of the graft used was usually < 50cm² (48.6%), with the result of graft survival of 91.4%, 77,78% of the scar taken from the groin area ensuring aesthetic.
Conclusion: Covering soft tissue defects with a full-thickness skin graft from the inguinal fold is one of the easy-to-apply and effective reconstructive methods for small and medium-sized defects after good graft bed preparation as well as ensuring aesthetic for the skin-taking area.
