Abstract

Objectives: To study the clinical characteristics of finger amputation and evaluate the outcome of microsurgical finger replantation.
Materials and methods: The study was carried out at Viet Tiep Hospital (from 1/2020 to 6/2023) on 93 patients with 104 fingers who were surgically reattached by microsurgery. A prospective descriptive study with follow-up on the characteristics of the fingers after surgery.
Results: 93 patients with 104 severed fingers were replanted with microsurgical technique, including 54 males and 39 females, aged from 18 to 67 years old; Finger 2 accounts for most proportion with 32/104 (30,77%). The length of surgery depends on the case, ranging from 3 to 9 hours and the average is 4,5±1,7 hours. After 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, and 24 months follow-up. In the first 3 months, there were 3 cases of paresthesia, pain, or numbness, 1 case still had paresthesia after 6 months. 87 patients with 93 fingers were examined again after 6 months with 62/93 fingers connected by microsurgery having a relatively good function, nail deformity, and lobe atrophy occurred with 3/87 cases but not significant. 84/87 patients expressed cosmetic (physical) satisfaction with the reattached finger.
Conclusions: Finger reattachment surgery by microsurgery is the first choice for medical facilities with sufficient technical equipment and skilled surgeons in applying microsurgery techniques to solve the problem (finger amputation).
