Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on the survival of experimental skin flap.
Subjects and method: Experimental skin flaps (ratio 1:3) were created on the backs (2cm:6cm) of 10 rabbits. The experimental group received HBOT, while the control group did not.
Results: After 7 days, the experimental group treated with HBOT (6 rabbits) showed all skin flaps survived (6 flaps/6 flaps = 100%) with pink color (6 flaps/6 flaps = 100%) and increased neovascularization (6 flaps/6 flaps = 100%). In contrast, the control group (4 rabbits) without HBOT showed necrosis at the distal end of the flaps (4 flaps/4flaps = 100%).
Conclusions HBOT helps to nourish the skin flap in experimental flap transfer surgery: the skin flap periphery is pink, warm temperature, good capillary return, histopathological image increases the number of new blood vessels; experimental skin flap with a ratio of 1/3 in flap transfer surgery combined with HBOT treatment is completely alive. Using HBOT combined with nourishing experimental skin flap is safe.
