Evaluation of mortality predictors in burn patients with invasive mechanical ventilation

Abstract

Objectives: Evaluation of mortality predictors in burn patients with invasive mechanical ventilation.
Subjects and methods: 234 burn patients with mechanical ventilation treated at the intensive care unit, National Burn Hospital, from January 2022 to June 2024 have clear results: Survival or mortality in the hospital.
Results: In the group mortality, the main cause of intubation was inhalation injury (56.33%), while in the group that survived, the main cause of intubation was sepsis and septic shock (46.05%) (p < 0.05). Compared with the survival group, the mortality group had significantly higher burn extent, deep burn area, number of inhalation injury patients, number of burn patients on the back, buttocks, legs, and arms (p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that only the deep burn area was independently associated with mortality (p < 0.05), with good predictive value for mortality (AUC = 0.8). The rBaux and ABSI scores had good predictive value for mortality. BOBI and RYAN scores had a fairly good predictive value for mortality. The median SMR of the ABSI index was closest to 1 (1.13).
Conclusion: The deep burn area was independently associated with mortality. The optimal score to predict mortality in burn patients with invasive ventilation treated at the National Burn Hospital was ABSI.
