Coverage of radiation-induced chest ulcer in a post-mastectomy patient using latissimus dorsi muscle flap (case report)

Abstract

Radiation-induced ulcers of the chest wall after breast cancer treatment are a common complication of radiation therapy for cancer treatment. Using good vascularization flaps to resurface is an important issue after removing the ulcer and affected site. Latisimus Dorsi myocutanous flap has been the primary option of plastic surgeons to reconstruction in spite of the significant morbidities of the donor site.
The patient name Pham Thi L., 55 years old, had radiation-induced ulcers in the right chest wall with its depth through to ribs, the dimensions of the affected site were 9 x 12cm. We have harvested latisimus muscle flap to recover the defect, split-thickness skin grafted on the surface of a muscle flap, drainage, primary suture of the donor site. After an operation, the muscle flap and skin graft survived completely with good healing.
