Abstract
Objectives: To assess sleep quality and related factors in patients after abdominal surgery at the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Ha Dong General Hospital in 2024 - 2025.
Subjects and methods: A prospective descriptive study was conducted among 90 patients aged 18 and older, during the first three postoperative days after abdominal surgery. Data collection tools included the RCSQ, NRS, HADS-A scales, and a ward environment questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0, including descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and Pearson/Spearman correlation coefficients (p < 0.05).
Results: Subjects were mainly over 56 years old (42.2%) and 18-35 years old (35.6%); females accounted for 55.6%. Laparoscopic surgery accounted for the majority (71.1%). The mean sleep score gradually increased from the first to the third postoperative night but remained at a moderate level. Patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery and those receiving analgesics/sedatives had significantly better sleep quality (p < 0.05). Anxiety had the strongest negative correlation with sleep quality on the first night; pain had an increasing negative correlation over the nights and was highest on the third night; disturbing factors from the ward environment (noise, light, medical activities) also had a significant negative correlation with sleep quality (p < 0.05), with the most pronounced impact starting from the second night.
Conclusion: Sleep quality of patients after abdominal surgery is still limited. Pain, anxiety, and the ward environment are the main barriers. Nurses need to optimize pain control, provide psychological support, and improve the quiet environment to enhance sleep and promote recovery for patients.
