Assessment of anxiety levels and associated factors in patients before oocyte retrieval for in vitro fertilization

Abstract

Objective: To assess the level of preprocedural anxiety in patients undergoing oocyte retrieval for in vitro fertilization (IVF) using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) scale and to identify associated factors. 
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 102 infertile patients undergoing oocyte retrieval for IVF at the Military Clinical Embryology Institute from September 2025 to March 2026. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling. Anxiety levels were assessed using GAD-7 scale before anesthesia. Associations between anxiety levels and related factors were analyzed using Chi-square or Fisher’s exact tests. Results: The mean GAD-7 anxiety score was 9.25 ± 4.19. Moderate anxiety was the most common level (38.2%). Patient age, duration of infertility, having children, and family pressure were significantly associated with pre-procedure anxiety (p < 0.05). 
Conclusion: Pre-procedural anxiety before oocyte retrieval is relatively common among IVF patients, with moderate anxiety being the most prevalent level. Anxiety levels are associated with factors such as patient age, duration of infertility, parenthood status, and family pressure.
