Analysis of antibiotic use in inpatients at Le Huu Trac National Burn Hospital in 2024

Abstract

Objective: To analyze antibiotic use in inpatients at Le Huu Trac National Burn Hospital in 2024.
Subjects and methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 medical records of inpatients who received antibiotics, selected from a population of 3,063 in patients who received at least one antibiotic in 2024. Stratified sampling by clinical departments was applied. The analyzed variables included patient characteristics, patterns of antibiotic use, and the appropriateness of antibiotic use.
Results: The study recorded 879 antibiotic treatment courses, with a mean of 2.20 ± 1.54 courses per patient. The mean number of antibiotics used was 3.08 ± 1.40 agents per patient, and the mean duration of antibiotic therapy was 7.17 ± 3.04 days. Monotherapy accounted for 61.9% of regimens, whereas combination therapy accounted for 38.1%. The rates of appropriate antibiotic use were high in terms of dosage, dosing interval, and antibiotic combination, at 98.2%, 97.6%, and 95.2%, respectively. Among the clinical departments, the Intensive Care Unit had the highest level of antibiotic use.
Conclusion: Antibiotic use was generally appropriate in terms of dosage, dosing interval, and combination therapy. However, antibiotic use strategies, particularly regarding combination therapy and treatment duration, should continue to be optimized.
