Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the application of scrotal skin flaps in the treatment of patients with penile burns and its sequelae at Cho Ray Hospital from May 1, 2012, to January 30, 2017.
Method: Prospective study of patients with penile burns treated at Cho Ray hospital from April 12, 2013, to January 30, 2017.
Results: The study reports 7 male patients with external genital and perineal burns treated at the Burns Unit, Cho Ray Hospital. Occupational accidents account for the majority of presentations, of which, high electrical voltage was the main culprit. All the patients had deep burns to the genitalia and required surgical intervention. Some patients had deep burns and received penile reconstruction surgery in the early period, while others had reconstructive surgery of their penile burn complications. After surgery, most of the wounds healed well and satisfied their functional and physiological demands.
Conclusion: Special types of penile burns are not clinically common. The application of scrotal skin flaps to cover burn wounds in the early stages or treat the sequelae of penile burns produced good results. Patients with extensive deep burns to the genitalia, especially the male genitalia involving urethral injury, resolutely need surgery to prevent the consequences of contraction, deformation and urethral stenosis from occurring later on.
