Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the results of applying the surgical safety checklist at the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Unit, Agriculture General Hospital, in 2018.
Object and methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2018 to October 2018 on 350 patients belonging to patients who required elective and emergency surgeries.
Results: Before skin incision, 9.7% of surgical team members introduced their names; the patients’ names, surgical procedures, and incision sites were confirmed in 95.1% of surgeries; nurses confirmed the sterility of medical and surgical devices and supplies, such as surgical instruments, electric suction machines and electric scalpels in 97.7% of surgeries; 95.4% of surgeons checked surgical gauze and instruments before skin incision; 16% of surgeons prognosticated possible complications during surgery; and 22% of surgeons predicted surgical durations. Before closing the incision, 94.3% of surgeons
completed checking needles, surgical gauze, and surgical instruments. In addition, 40.9% of surgeons read specimen labels aloud and wrote patients’ names.
Conclusion: The application of the surgical safety checklist plays an important role in detecting the steps that have not been performed correctly to rectify errors that may occur before, during and after surgery.
