Essential medical supplies for mass burn disaster response: Lessons from simulated drills

Abstract
Objective: To assess the actual use of drugs and essential medical equipment and supplies during drills simulating mass burn disasters, aiming to propose a more practical and appropriate medical supply set for emergency response.
Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study combined with retrospective analysis was conducted using data from five mass burn disaster response drills organized or co-organized by the National Burns Hospital between 2016 and 2024. Lists of essential drugs and medical supplies (both consumable and non-consumable) were recorded and compared between the estimated and the actual quantity used, categorized by patient groups (critical, severe, and minor).
Results: Non-consumable medical items showed a tendency to be streamlined in later drills. Consumable medical supplies for critical and severe burn victims were increasingly aligned with actual needs. For minor injuries, the planned and actual usage remained consistent across the drills.
Conclusion: Establishing essential medical supply sets based on practical data improves preparedness, optimizes resource use, and is more suitable for real-world mass burn disaster response.
