Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical and laboratory characteristics, treatment outcomes, and factors associated with treatment outcomes in patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) treated at Military Hospital 175.
Subjects and methods: A prospective descriptive study was conducted on 48 patients with diabetic ketoacidosis who were treated at Military Hospital 175 between February 2024 and October 2025.
Results: The study included 48 patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), with a mean age of 46.2 ± 15.1 years; 64.6% were female. Type 2 diabetes mellitus accounted for 68.8% of cases, and 54.2% of patients were newly diagnosed with diabetes. Infection was the most common precipitating factor (62.5%). Moderate DKA was the predominant severity category (58.3%). The DKA resolution rate was 91.7%, with a mean time to DKA resolution of 32.4 ± 12.3 hours. The mean length of hospital stay was 8.9 ± 4.1 days, and the survival-to-discharge rate was 95.8%. Hypoglycemia (29.2%) and hypokalemia (25.0%) were the most common treatment-related complications. Age ≥ 65 years, severe DKA, and impaired consciousness at admission were significantly associated with unfavorable treatment outcomes (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Most patients with DKA responded favorably to treatment. Older age, severe DKA, and impaired consciousness at admission were associated with unfavorable treatment outcomes.
