Abstract

Background: Sensory disorders (especially itching and pain) are common symptoms in patients after burn injuries, affecting treatment results and quality of life of patients after discharge. Current treatments such as antihistamines, topical moisturizers, etc. are limited. Using Gabapentin as an anti-epileptic to treat the burning scar sensation is a new and effective option for this symptom.
Patients and methods: Clinical trials and prospective study, description, compare before and after treatment.
16 patients, 11 men, 5 women, aged 16 to 71, with symptoms of burn scar sensation disorders treated at the Department of Physical Therapy-Rehabilitation, Le Huu Trac National Burn Hospital from July 2019 to December 2019. Treated with Gabapentin daily, 30 days treatment course.
Results: 16 patients (100%) had no sensory disorders or were few (average VAS score decreased from 7.00 ± 1.00 to 1.00 ± 1.00, p < 0.05); improved quality of life (ISS score decreased from 13.00 ± 1.59 to 7.50 ± 1.30, p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Gabapentin is a new and highly effective treatment option.
