Có rất nhiều loại vật liệu thay thế da phân nhóm theo đặc tính sinh học, nhưng tác dụng chính là cải thiện môi trường cho liền vết thương (LVT). Chúng không các tác dụng kháng khuẩn nhưng khi vết thương được che phủ kín thì nguy cơ nhiễm khuẩn giảm đi rất nhiều. Tác dụng chính của các vật liệu sinh học bao gồm: che phủ và bảo vệ vết thương; giảm đau; phục hồi được môi trường sinh học tốt nhất cho bề mặt vết thuơng, kích thích quá trình liền vết thương; cải thiện chất lượng sẹo da sau khi vết thương liền; góp phần giảm tỷ lệ tử vong và tăng cường chất lượng cuộc sống của bệnh nhân sau khi khỏi bỏng.
